When the pilT mutant was tested, we found that competence was abolished since no transformants could be detected. This finding confirms that PilT which powers pilus retraction is critical for DNA transformation, and suggests that the background level of transformation observed in the comP mutant was dependent on pilus retraction, and thus Tfp-dependent.
