StkP is involved in the regulation of cell wall synthesis and cell division/elongation in S. pneumoniae. A stkP mutant displays a strongly reduced natural transformability compared to wild type. StkP could phosphorylate ComE at Thr128 and the StkP/ComE pathway induced global changes in response to acidic stress.
