Function


ComD, a membrane-bound histidine kinase, is the receptor of the competence-stimulating peptide (CSP). Binding of CSP to its associated ComD receptor will result in autophosphorylation of ComD and subsequent transfer of the phosphoryl group to ComE. This activation initiates the transcription of early competence genes.
