Function


ComA, a bifunctional ATP-binding cassette transporter, processes the propeptide ComC to produce mature competence-stimulating peptide (CSP) and actively secretes it into the extracellular environment. This secretion is a critical step in the quorum-sensing mechanism that triggers competence development. Once CSP reaches a threshold concentration, it activates the ComDE two-component system, leading to the expression of early competence genes and eventually the late competence genes required for DNA uptake and recombination.
