TfoX regulates natural competence via CytR in a chitin-dependent manner. The Δtfox mutant showed 142.3-, 52.8-, 77.9-, 50.1-, and 21.9-fold downregulation in pilA, pilB, comEA, comEC, and qstR, respectively.
